A performance budget for the editor

Every frame we render has a budget. How we measure it, and what we cut to stay inside it.

Two designers in black talking in a white studio, one perched on a stool by a tall table.

The DrumKit editor has a budget: every frame on the canvas must draw in under eight milliseconds on a five-year-old laptop. We measure it on every change, on real files our customers shared with us for the purpose.

When a feature goes over, it waits. Twice that has meant cutting something we loved. Both times, nobody asked for it back, and the editor stayed fast.
